Once home to the Attawandaron and later the Iroquois Nations, the area was settled in the late 1700’s by British and Americans. In 1846 Hamilton became a city and, and in 1877 three historic events took place: the first commercial telephone service in Canada was established, the very first telephone exchange in the British Empire took place and the second telephone call in North America also took place. In 1934 Canada’s second Canadian Tire store was opened and 1964 saw the grand opening of the very first Tim Hortons. Today, with a population of over 519,000 people, Hamilton is famous as a film site for television and motion picture, and is home to the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum and shares the Royal Botanical Gardens with Burlington. |
