Inhabited for thousands of years by various First Nations peoples, and settled by French officers and traders in the 1700’s, Winnipeg is the capital of Manitoba. Throughout the centuries the area served as a fur trading centre, and by 1881, when the Canadian Pacific Railway built the first direct railway linking eastern Canada to the Prairies, the population increased dramatically, with many immigrants coming to settle in the city. Known as the “Gateway to the West”, Winnipeg hosts many festivals, including the Festival du Voyageur and the Winnipeg International Writers Festival. The city is also home to the only theatre in Canada dedicated to Jewish culture – the Winnipeg Jewish Theatre (WJT), plays an important part in the Canadian film industry, is the inspiration for the name of Winnie-the Pooh, and boasts a population of over 663,000 people. |
