Once called Snake Lake due to the amount of garter
snakes in the area, the settlement initially consisted of one log cabin which
measured 20 feet wide by 20 feet long, and 22 residents, all living in the same
house! A sawmill supplied lumber to nearby Red Deer, and by 1904 there were
cottages, a store, post office and hotel. The first council was established on
13 January, 1913, and residents still celebrate this today with the 1913 Days
Festival. In 1946 Sylvan Lake became a town and over the following 30 years
grew to over 900 residents. A popular tourist destination known for its outdoor
sports and summer festivals, today Sylvan Lake has a population of well over 12,000
people, and is one of the nation’s fastest growing rural communities. |
