The original inhabitants of the area were the Coast Salish, who named it Kwikwetlem, meaning “red fish up the river.” In 1808 the great explorer Simon Fraser visited the region, and by the 1860’s Europeans were settling there. In 1889 a vast lumber mill, Fraser Mills was opened, and by 1908 a small town was born. Over the years, many French Canadians came and built Maillardville, the largest Francophone centre in the west. Today, Maillardville still has French-language street signs, a French Immersion program in the schools, and celebrates the Festival Du Bois. Since WWII, Coquitlam has grown to become a centre of the arts and over 600 retail businesses, and boasts a population of over 126,000 people. |
