Originally inhabited by the Tsawwassen Nation, the area known as Delta was first settled by Europeans in 1868. Encompassing three distinct communities – Tsawwassen, Ladner and North Delta – Delta was somewhat isolated from the rest of the Lower Mainland until 1959, when the George Massey Tunnel was built, forever linking Delta to Richmond and Vancouver. In 1960 the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal opened, granting passage to Vancouver Island, and in 1962 Highway 99 was rerouted from Surrey’s King George Highway to create a route that leads from Ladner to Surrey. Over the next 20 years Delta grew in population by 400%! Today, North Delta is also connected to New Westminster via the Alex Fraser Bridge and Delta, which is the sister city to Mangalore, India, boasts a population of over 99,000 people. |
