Home of the legend of the Ogopogo (a sea monster in Okanagan Lake), and originally a Mission called L'Anse au Sable, it was in 1892 that Kelowna became a town. Over the years churches, a hotel, store and trading post were built, and Kelowna gained a tobacco growing operation and several fruit farms. In 1904 the Kelowna Clarion (first newspaper) was established, in 1908 the first hospital opened and in 1912 the first telephone exchange took place in town. In 1958 the largest floating bridge in Canada – the Okanagan Lake Bridge – was opened by Her Royal Highness, Princess Margaret and BC Premier W.A.C. Bennett. Today with a population of over 179,000 people, Kelowna has turned into a wine centre, tourism hotspot and even a popular film location. |
