Located on Vancouver Island and the actual namesake of the famous sweet treat Nanaimo Bars, the area was first discovered in 1791 by the Spanish seamen of the Juan Carrasco. Settled during the early 19th century, in 1849 the Chief Ki-et-sa-kun of the Snuneymuxw Nation told the Hudson’s Bay Company of the area’s penchant for coal, and this quickly became the town’s chief export. Over the next hundred years Nanaimo’s coal proved to be too dangerous to mine due to its gas levels, and eventually lumber became the new industry. Today, with a population of over 98,000 people, Nanaimo is popular with tourists and famous for its blues and jazz music and festivals. |
