Affectionately known as “The Peach City’, the area was originally settled by the Okanagan Nation, whose descendants still exist to this day. In 1866 an Irishman by the name of Thomas Ellis became the first European settler, planting fruit trees, raising cattle and establishing the Penticton Hotel in 1892. That same year the sternwheeler S.S. Aberdeen launched into service, broadening Penticton’s scope. During WWII the local airport was built for military service, and in 1948 the Crowsnest Highway was built, granting access to the town from other parts of the province. Over the years Penticton has grown to a population of over 42,000 people and become known for its myriad of festivals, such as the Okanagan Wine Festival, Peachfest and the Elvis Festival. |
