Originally inhabited by the Secwepemc and Cree-Saulteaux Nations, Kamloops (called Tk'əmlúps in Shuswap, meaning “meeting of the waters”) saw its first European settlers in 1811. In 1812 a fur trading post called “Fort Cumcloups” was established, followed by another – “Fort Shuswap”, with both eventually merging in 1813. Over the years the great Chief Nicola of the Secwepemc was highly instrumental in keeping peace between the First Nations and Europeans, and he also created an alliance between his people and the nations of the Okanagan and Nlaka'pamux. After decades of fur trading, Kamloops eventually became a centre for lumber, cement, pulp and copper, and even has a crater named after it on Mars! With a population of over 98,000 people, Kamloops is also a popular tourist destination due to its beauty and pleasant weather. |
